Reflections 3/18/2020: Today is “National Awkward Moments Day!” Not sure if that means celebrating all the embarrassingly awkward moments from your past, or license to commit new ones with absolute abandon! We’ve all got them whether we like it or not! Junior High School for me was one non-stop awkward moment! Self-conscious, zit covered, hair still pulled up into my horse pony tail, puny and flat-chested (stunted development from a bad horse wreck) so I still wore kids’ size clothing, aware of in-crowd cliques but unable to muster up the feigned cockiness required to enter them! Good riddance to those awkward years! Unfortunately no one fully escapes them! Awkward happens! One of my most embarrassing ones was when our Clipper Skipper dance/cheer team for the NBA Clippers was being debuted for the public on center court. The manager of the Clippers threatened us with death if we screwed up after our big public relations hype! He was so nervous that he was pacing in front of the audio equipment and half-way through our dance routine stepped on the cord, unplugging it from the speakers! We went from looking like a professional dance team to a demolition derby of cataclysmic crashes! “Awkward” was too kind of a word! Embarrassing, humiliating, and ashamed more like it! And it wasn’t even our fault! So let’s give ourselves license to do awkward things today, but bend them toward quirky words and actions that convey love toward others, even if the moment isn’t right!
