Reflections 3/19/2020: I braved a walk out in the glorious sunshine yesterday and was delighted to see kids riding bikes everywhere! Discovering for the first time all the well-designed trails running through our Valley! Usually they are unused except by walkers with-or-without dogs in tow. The smiles on their little faces as they swept by me was a joy to see! Using the curvaceous paths as they were designed to be used! It will be interesting to see if, when this ban on school and gathering places is no longer in effect, do these kids go back to indoor activities, or have they stumbled upon a whole new outdoor way-of-play? I have to say the exception to this cloistered indoors pattern is blown to smithereens by the kids in our cul-de-sac! They are out in the street playing come rain, snow or shine! l LOVE that! Chalk art! Scooter jumps! Endless basketball shots! Koolaid stands! Hockey games! Capture the flag standoffs! Snow forts! Whatever their imagination comes up with! Transports me back to my own childhood which made the “Little Rascals’” plots look tame! How we survived our exploits is still largely due to my parents’ daily kneeling-by-our beds prayers for our safety! Add in frequent horse wrecks and no cell phones and you have a recipe for disaster! My dad, a doctor, kept tetanus shots and a suturing kit in his dresser drawer! And had to use them often! All six of us kids managed to survive childhood! I hope these Coronavirus restrictions help this generation of kids discover more of the outdoors
