Yesterday I ventured out on my mountain bike despite a bit of dizziness. (Gotta capitalize on those moments without nausea!) I intended to make it a short and fairly flat ride because I wasn’t sure how long the reprieve would last. A ways out I passed a guy running with his dog and tried to nod an “hello,” but he refused to make eye contact. Then 50 yards later I spied a set of keys exposed on the path. I leapt off my bike and grabbed them, calling frantically to the runner (oblivious in his headset), and finally made enough of a racket to get his attention. Sure enough, they were his keys, but only his house keys… his BMW car key had become disconnected and must have fallen elsewhere. Being recently from the Middle East, (given his accent and struggle with English), he seemed confused when I offered to help him search the trail for his lost key. Figured that on my bike I could cover more territory. So off we went. He searching the trail that he took on the way out, and me scouring his route on the way back. After a 1/2 hour of hunting, we found the covert key! He still seemed confused by my part in this venture, but did his best to communicate thankfulness. Who knows, maybe I was an ambassador of caring to him that might give him hope in our American hearts. Or perhaps a needed challenge to his gender assumptions. Whatever, it was a quirky interaction Lord! Perhaps You will use it for good in ways that I will never know! At least for me it was an exhilarating break from my couch-potato-hood!
