This generation probably has no idea what this piece of furniture is! A sewing machine table. No longer in style, refurbished for updated purposes. Not sure I am ready to do this as I am still old fashioned enough to actually sew on my antiquated companion. Repairs on old clothes and even new projects require this seemingly outdated machine. I like how cute and functional this new use of it could be, but hate to see the functionality of the sewing machine shrugged off as irrelevant. I just read an article in the newspaper yesterday that talked about how churches are being forced to change… especially after the Pandemic that drove attendance down or addicted people to the comforts of online viewing. Sewing machine being retired? I hope not. Church, as it was meant to be is so much more than just a gathering once a week in a building. It is a community of kindred spirits coming together to support one another in tangible ways, and reach out with their synergized resources to make the world around them a better place. “Walking our talk” can’t be done in a Zoom Room. I don’t think our society has ANY idea how many social service ministries churches provide to our communities. FoodBanks. Tutoring the underprivileged. Pregnancy support. Foster care homes. Addiction recovery. Divorce recovery. Parenting training. Wells dug in 3rd world countries. Financial support to families in times of need. Orphanages built. Refugees mentored. And that barely scratches the surface. These church ministries are probably our best defense against socialism promising to provide these services at great cost to our freedoms… and wallets. Sew… I hope churches won’t be refurbished into concession stands that no longer have the functional ability to repair and create the much needed support systems this world so desperately needs.
