Roo and I stumbled upon this guy on our morning walk yesterday. Probably a Cooper’s Hawk? Made me sad. It is likely the same hawk that spent last summer staging aerial battles with the magpies in my yard. He (or she) was so spunky and determined not to driven out of his hunting area, despite being outnumbered by the tuxedo entourage. Found is body at the base of his favorite tree to launch his offenses. No sign of a squirmish on his perfect body, so perhaps just old age. At least he died “in the saddle,” or in his case “wings at the ready.” Will bury him at the base of his lookout. I will miss him, attitude and all. Hopefully some day in Heaven we can compare wings, and he can teach me some of his best aerial moves!
