Reflections 7/5/2020: I been praying about something hands-on I can do about systemic racial injustice. I want my response to be more than words of protest that express outrage but no solutions. Opportunities are out there for advancement in the Black communities (in my lifetime huge strides have been made to equalize the playing field!), but so many kids get derailed before they even get started! Broken families. Generational poverty. Poor role models. Low expectations of self. Get-rich-quick schemes to sell drugs instead of the long, hard road of education. Success in school is the solution! I can help with this! Our church has had a “Whiz Kids” ministry for years that tutors kids in the inner city for better academic success. As soon as my immune system gets back on track, I am signing up! Used to do this in college, but my own kids’ struggle to read got me focused elsewhere. Time to return to this tangible way of helping! Doesn’t have a sweeping impact on injustice in America, but it can make a huge difference in a handful of kids’ lives. Lord, pour out Your love to them so they can see themselves as You see them… precious and gifted with Your God-given image to do great things!
